WORKING AT THE COMPUTER – HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DESK?

Furniture used for work should not only be nicely designed but also offer sufficient space and have good ergonomics. Only the combination of features from these three areas allows to state that we are dealing with the highest quality product. Working at the computer is associated with special requirements because it involves a long stay in one position and most often forces you to operate the mouse and keyboard, as well as to use some documents. Office furniture for the computer should therefore ensure convenient use of the equipment, and should not have a negative impact on employees‘ health nor cause excessive fatigue. Let‘s check what elements are important from an ergonomic point of view when choosing the best desk for computer work.

ERGONOMIC OFFICE FURNITURE

When choosing a desk for a specific person, you need to take into account the height of the desktop, its dimensions as well as the characteristics of the chair and monitor used. The optimal solution is to place the desktop at a height of 60 to 75 cm, with the possibility to adjust it to the employee‘s height. The design of the desk should give a person the possibility to sit comfortably with the knees bent close to 90° and with the feet resting freely on the ground. It is assumed that the height of the space for legs should be from about 55 to 70 cm. What also matters is the depth and width of the available space, which should be around 70 cm.

The size of the desk should be selected in such a way, so that it allows you to operate the keyboard and mouse with your arms freely lowered and elbows bent at about 90°. At the same time, the desktop size should be selected in such a way so that all necessary accessories are within the employee‘s reach.

A comfortable place for work by the computer should also allow the monitor to be positioned so that it is located at a distance of 40 to 75 cm in front of the viewer‘s eyes. The right desktop depth is therefore also important.

Office furniture that, according to the principles of good ergonomics, improve work comfort and directly contribute to improvements in work results. A comfortable desk position means usually fewer breaks at work and better focus on the task performed.
